Education and energy for the future

Training courses in Wildpoldsried/Allgäu qualify vocational schoolteachers from African countries for a world with a future.

In cooperation with the municipality of Wildpoldsried, the Berufliche Fortbildungszentren der Bayerischen Wirtschaft (bfz) gGmbH train African vocational schoolteachers in the handling and development of renewable energy systems. At the Ecological Education Centre in Wildpoldsried, they learn the basics of electrical and energy engineering as well as the construction of a solar work case 1. This serves as a visual object for their own further training in their home countries. Each course participant is obliged to teach at least 50 trainees per year with the content they have learned. The course participants are supported during this project AdA (German for “Training of Trainers”) by Bavarian vocational schoolteachers as mentors.

Green citizen energy for Africa

60% of people in Africa have no access to electricity - 80% of them live in rural areas. This is one of the obstacles to development on the continent. The Marshall Plan for Africa, which was initiated by BMZ Minister Dr. Gerd Müller, aims, among other things, to promote green citizen energy for Africa. Especially via small networks - independent of power lines and large power plants, self-managed and sustainable - 75 % of the energy in Africa could come from mini grids in the next 10 years 2.

Combining theory and practice

Practical training is the highest priority in the courses. And that is greatly appreciated. In this way, the participants are enthusiastic about the topic and are happy about the practical exercises. Unfortunately, in many countries, vocational school teaching is still too theoretical and not practice-oriented enough. Thus, there are too few skilled workers, especially in the technical field. Multiple exercises on measuring voltage, frequency and charging power show how to use the case for teaching purposes.
