"Life Orientation" aims to provide perspective

Young people learn about career opportunities in the traffic police

South Africa's unemployment rate exceeds 40 per cent, and among young people in townships such as Delft in Cape Town, the figure is often much higher. One of the main reasons for this is that young people are not sufficiently prepared for life after school.

Although the subject of 'Life Orientation' exists, it often fails to achieve its intended learning objectives. As part of a project funded by the Bavarian State Chancellery, bbw and HOPE Cape Town are focusing on improving career guidance.

Competency assessment and further education

Teachers conduct a practical exercise on competency assessment

The project offers programmes for teachers of the subject 'Life Orientation' and for young people. The focus for teachers is on training in career orientation methodologies and competency assessment.

This enables them to deliver targeted competency assessments and career guidance to students in the classroom. Meanwhile, the project regularly organises career and networking fairs to inform young people about different professions and training opportunities.
