Export as a development opportunity

As a traditional agricultural country, exports of raw materials and products from agriculture and horticulture are important pillars of economic development and a source of income for Ethiopia.

In addition to generating export earnings from cut flowers, herbs, fruit and vegetables, the horticultural sector in particular also makes a significant contribution to food security in the country. At the same time, this labour-intensive sector is an important factor for employment and development, especially in the rural areas.

This project was funded and supported by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) via sequa gGmbH.

Thanks to the German and international experts, the internal organisational structure, financial sustainability and public positioning of the partner association EHPEA (Ethiopian Horticulture Producer Exporters Association) in Addis Ababa were strengthened.

New services have improved social standards, environmental protection and sustainability at member companies, which operate in clusters across the country. A state-certified training centre was set up and equipped at EHPEA. Participation in national and international trade fairs was increased.
