Technical Seminar Mongolia – Waste Management and Environmental Education

As part of a week-long specialist information seminar, an 18-member delegation from Mongolia visited Bavarian companies and stakeholders in the waste management sector. Representatives of the MACE, MNRA, and GEAM associations learned about modern concepts in waste management and environmental education, gaining exciting insights into regional recycling, composting, and energy production facilities. The international exchange provided new impetus for sustainable development and future cooperation.

In September 2025, as part of its international engagement, bbw gGmbH welcomed an 18-member delegation from Mongolia to a specialist information seminar in Bavaria. The seminar focused on the topic of “Waste Management and Environmental Education” and was organized on behalf of the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development, and Energy.

The participants came from three key professional associations that play a key role in the field of environment and infrastructure in Mongolia: the Mongolian Association for Civil Engineers (MACE), the Mongolian National Recycling Association (MNRA), and the Global Entrepreneurs Association Mongolia (GEAM). The delegation consisted of executives, engineers, university lecturers, and entrepreneurs who are responsible for the development and implementation of environmental strategies in their respective organizations.

Insights and findings from the technical visits

During the technical seminar, the delegation from Mongolia gained practical insights into various Bavarian waste management facilities. Particularly impressive was the presentation by the Waste Management Association of the City and District of Hof and the tour of the Hof Waste Service Center, where modern separation and recycling processes as well as landfill aftercare measures were presented. In addition, the delegation learned about the weitergeben.org initiative, which presented innovative approaches to the reuse of second-hand goods. There, the participants discussed the social and ecological aspects of waste prevention in relation to used furniture.

At Kompostring Stadt und Landkreis Hof e.V., the participants learned about decentralized composting, including a machine demonstration and the involvement of regional stakeholders. At KRONES Recycling GmbH in Neutraubling, the delegation gained insights into modern recycling solutions for plastic packaging, from cleaning and decontamination to recycling. The participants were particularly impressed by the MetaPure systems and the resource-saving HydroCircle process for water recovery. KRONES is already active with projects in Mongolia, which made the exchange particularly practical and future-oriented.

In Rehau, the Willy Böhme GmbH & Co. KG biogas plant demonstrated how organic waste can be used to generate energy. At BellandVision in Pegnitz, the participants gained insights into the organization and implementation of dual systems for packaging disposal in Germany – a model that is particularly relevant to the Mongolian context.

Finally, ZECH Umwelt GmbH in Nuremberg (soil washing plant) and Stulln (building materials landfill) demonstrated practical solutions for the treatment and recycling of construction waste – a topic that is of great interest in Mongolia.

The technical program was supplemented by a guided tour of Nuremberg and a presentation of the activities of bbw gGmbH at its Hof site.

The seminar not only provided technical input, but also promoted international cooperation in the field of sustainable development. The participants were impressed by the Bavarian standards and took away numerous ideas for the further development of waste management in Mongolia.

bbw gGmbH would like to thank all partners and participants for the successful implementation and looks forward to future joint projects in an international context.
